Investments into Mobile Marketing Explodes : Retailers expected to invest $55B annually in mobile by 2015

Retailers will significantly increase their mobile marketing spend over the next few years due in large part to coupons and advertising, according to a new study from Juniper Research.

In Juniper’s “Retail mCommerce: Mobile & Tablet Marketing, Advertising & Coupon Strategies 2013-2017” report, they look at how retailers increase their mobile initiatives to drive more in-store traffic and on-line sales over the next few years.

“Mass smartphone and tablet adoption amongst end users leading to a surge in mobile and nomadic browsing, the development of mobile and couch commerce, the attendant decline in circulation of newspapers and many magazines and leading brands seeking out new ways of engaging with consumers — these are all factors which, in isolation or combination, mean that including mobile as a marketing channel is absolutely critical for brands and retailers,” he said.

It’s Time to Invest in mobile
The $55 billion annual spend in 2015 almost doubles the spend that marketers are expected to invest in mobile this year.

Retailers  use mobile for everything from helping consumers discover new products to driving both on-line and in-store sales via a mobile point-of-sale.

However,  retailers should be looking at mobile coupons to do more than to simply drive there sales. When used with personalized messaging, mobile coupons help retailers establish closer one-on-one relationships with shoppers to drive repeat business.

Although mobile spend is continuing to rise there is still a very large portion of the retail businesses or even businesses in general that have no idea what mobile is or how it is relevant to their business. There is still a large gap in education to business as they still try to understand and grasp how this is relevant to there business.

Mobile Advertising 

The goal behind brand advertising is to expose a consumer to a retailer with hopes that the brand stays in the fore front and will lead to a future sale.

As retailers become better educated with mobile, it is expected that more retailers will swing to more location-based advertising to tap into this opportunity.

Three areas – North America, Latin America and Western Europe – will control the largest percentage of mobile marketing spend.

From Boutique Agency to Empire

In a matter of very few years, the Internet has consolidated itself as a very powerful platform that has forever changed the way we do business and the way we communicate. The Internet, as no other communication medium, has given a Globalized dimension to the world. It has become the Universal source of information for millions of people in every part of their day and has made distances shorter and the world smaller.

In the past 12+ years marketing has been reinvented. It’s hard to believe that today there are still many advertising agencies, marketing companies, printers, publishers and designers who are still trying to figure it out.  It‘s a crazy concept to think that as a business owner you know all your clients need digital marketing, social media and mobile and yet you don’t expand your service offerings. How much money are you losing? Better yet, how long will your clients stay with you when you can’t deliver on their needs and are still cooking up the brontosaurus bones?

OK,  so agencies and alike are not completely to blame as the world of digital is very confusing: do you hire, do you outsource, what do you offer, what do you change and so on.

To scale your business much quicker you either have to automate what it is you are doing , expand or you have to outsource.

Each of these areas has their own challenges and that is where it has become confusing.

If you automate you may become more efficient but you still may not be able to deliver on your clients’ needs. Now that you have automated, you have to either expand or outsource.

So to expand usually means to hire. And to hire means additional staff and salaries. If you only want to offer your clients web development, you hire a developer (techie) and they build solutions one by one for your clients. In turn the cost is high, it takes a long time to produce and then we have the challenge that a technical person is not a marketer and a website is for marketing? Now how about mobile marketing, social media, PPC, SEO and the list goes on. Do you hire someone for each task because each task on its own is a unique skill set knowledge and ongoing education?

I think you get the point. Let’s look to outsourcing. This has certainly become a common option but also a nightmare in a lot of cases because now they are working for you, not with you. They don’t have the same vested interest in your business, profit margins become further decreased, delivery time may not be reliable. Do they have marketing experience? How do they keep up to date on what’s hot? How do you delver information to them and how does that get translated from the customer. Very few businesses are able to make this work because it’s hard to find someone that cares as much about your client as you do and when you outsource you now rest the entire process into another business’s hands. Or even worse, an individual who claims to be an expert with very little control. Don’t get me wrong this can be very effective but can also be very damaging to your business.

So as a business owner how do you take your boutique business and build it from 2, 4, 7 even 15 staff into a one stop shop and empire you can look down on and one day pass on to your kids or sell and retire to the Bahamas.

3. Set yourself apart.

If you are an agency like some of our agency partners they found that the advertising space is very crowded especially traditional marketing. Franchising and Its Changing Trends

Like most industries, the franchising industry is evolving and changing over the years.

Several new trends have made their appearance and some of these have a bearing on investors and their franchise operations. The top franchises in 2011 are in the fast food restaurants, hotels and service industries with health care, senior services, child care, pets, fitness and financial planning as close contenders.

In this scenario, there are three important trends that have surfaced, according to the International Franchise Association. These are

  • An increasing number of women and minorities in the franchising industry
  • Internalization of franchising
  • Growing use and need of technology

These trends are likely to impact franchising in a positively significant manner, making it a vibrant and forceful sector to reckon with. There are roughly four hundred franchise systems at the international level which are transforming domestic brands into renowned and recognized names worldwide. This means franchisees must look beyond the domestic market.

The franchisors’ response to new trends

Franchisors, in response to these trends, are looking overseas for franchisees .  Some franchisors begin by offering a single unit type deal that is later increased to multiple units and eventually a master franchise opportunity that carries even more benefits.

With the increasing involvement of women and minorities in franchising, the industry is making it easier for new entrants who might otherwise find it hard to start a business due to the lack of funds and experience. The participation of women and minority groups is being encouraged by bodies such as the IFA’s Women’s Franchise Committee and others by offering them training and opportunities to network.

Another noticeable trend is the creative use of technology among franchisors and franchisees. They use the Internet to share information, opinions, and reports and also leverage it to market their business. Digital marketing is big business these days and is effectively being used to target the business’ markets. New and existing franchises are increasing their media profiles with blogs, websites, email newsletters, podcasts and other strategic methods to promote themselves online. Franchisors are exploring the importance of integrating a social media policy in their franchise agreement so that they can retain control of their brand.

What to look for in a Franchisor

Franchisees understand that their success depends on the franchisor and the support they offer.  If franchisors do not give them what they expect, no matter how much money or effort franchisees puts in, they cannot experience the success they seek. Some of the factors that help a franchisee choose a franchisor are:

  • The franchisor’s history and track record, number of years in business and experience in the industry
  • The franchisor’s leadership abilities, an idea of existing relationship with current franchisee network and any issues that exist between franchisor and franchisee
  • Whether the franchisor has a mission and vision for the next five or ten years in relation to the franchisee network.
  • The franchisor must be ready to listen to his franchisee network.
  • The quality of the product and services, marketing support  provided with training, resources

Like any other business venture, franchising also requires due diligence checks by the franchisor as well as franchisee since the wrong decision can result in expensive consequences for both parties.
